I’ve been deep-diving on the Ologies podcast hosted by Alie Ward. On it, she interviews scientists about their subject, asks them to dispel or confirm myths, and learns what they love and hate about their jobs.
There are so many fabulous ologies represented. Here are a few that made me wish I had their job:
Paleontology (Dinosaurs) - Yes, I’m one of those people who loves dinosaurs. I even gave tours of the dinosaur hall at my local museum when I was in college.
Megafelinology (Snow Leopards and other big cats) - I have a huge painting of a Snow Leopard on my wall. I love all big cats, but Snow Leopards have a special place in my heart.
Museology (Museums) - I love museums. I once interviewed for a job creating museum exhibits and was sad for days when I didn’t get the job. Also, museums play an important role in the series I’m currently writing.
Volcanology (Volcanoes) - What can I say? They’re fascinating.

But, as much as each of these interviews made me wish I had their job, I’m honest enough to know that my passion for all of these topics, plus so many more, makes me a poor candidate for making any of them my life’s work.
That’s the great thing about being a writer. I can delve into all the topics I’m interested in, for as long as I like. Then move on to the next interesting thing when I’m ready.
But still, sometimes I dream of leaving my accounting job behind and doing something more interesting.
What about you? What’s your favorite ology?
