There’s supposed to be a chance this week to catch a glimpse of Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS).

Image of a comet with a long, blue tail against star speckled night sky. Text reads Comet Spotting.

So, I opened my star watching app this evening and got the general direction the comet was supposed to be in. There was a brightly glowing object there, which had me rushing to get my binoculars.

Was it the comet?

I have no idea, to be honest. When I used the binoculars, the image sharpened, but also danced around like a drunk flea, making it impossible to identify. I guess my hands aren’t steady enough to keep the binoculars as still as a telescope.

I’d like to think that I saw the comet, but when I looked up images of it online, there was a clear tail, which I didn’t see. So, what I saw was likely something else.

How about you? Have you seen the comet?
