One of my favorite workshops that I’ve attended this year was the in-person workshop Fight Scenes: From Practical to Tactical taught by Carla Hoch at the Author Nation conference in Las Vegas.

She and her assistant demonstrated holds and kicks and other techniques, accompanied by explanations that will definitely help me write more realistic fight scenes. She gave not just the what, but the why. And she answered all of our questions.

Plus, she has a fantastic sense of humor, which made the information that much easier to digest.

She has two books where writers can find more information. I’m partway through her first book, FIGHT WRITE: How to Write Believable Fight Scenes and the pages are already colorful from all of the highlighting I’ve done.

A book cover with the text Fight Write overlaid over an image of two fists.

She’s giving two online workshops at an upcoming, virtual conference I’m attending and I’m looking forward to being able to ask more questions.

So, for writers, these books and her workshops are highly recommended.

And for my readers, any future fight scenes I write will be heavily influenced by Carla’s teachings!
