I asked ChatGPT to generate a marketing image for Betrayal based on the description on the back of the book.

This is the first image. I think it’s pretty darn good, even though Kai is blond and this guy isn’t. I don’t care about that for marketing images. I just want the right atmosphere and tone.

An image of a man and a woman in a jungle with suspenseful lighting and bad guys approaching.

Attempt #1

But what’s up with that guy standing on the tree branch on the right? Weird. I had Chat redo the image.

This is what I got next.

An image of a man, standing, and an injured woman who is sitting on the ground. They are in a jungle with suspenseful lighting, a waterfall, and a bad guy is approaching.

Attempt #2

Not bad. After all, Susana did have a rough time of it. However, no way would Kai ever point a gun at her head!

I explained that to Chat and this is what came next.

An image of a man, crouching, and a woman who is sitting on the ground and looking at him pleadingly. They are in a jungle with suspenseful lighting and a bad guy is approaching.

Attempt #3

The position of the female in this one just felt too weak and helpless. If you’ve read Betrayal, you’ll know that Susana is neither weak nor helpless!

So, back to the drawing board.

An image of a man and a woman standing in a jungle with suspenseful lighting and a bad guy is approaching.

Attempt #4

I really liked this one. But his hand up by his shoulder seems to be missing a gun! Or maybe he has an invisible gun?

I pointed this out to Chat, and he (yeah, for some reason I think of it as a he) asked if I preferred to have a gun show up in that hand or for the hand to be repositioned.

I chose repositioned.

And this is what I got.

An image of a man and a woman standing in a jungle with suspenseful lighting, ancient ruins behind them, and a bad guy is approaching.

Attempt #5

I like this a lot. However, there’s something very strange going on with Susana’s hand and elbow. Since I was tired and didn’t want to keep working on this, I called it a night.

All of these images did a good job of creating a suspenseful jungle scene.

Overall, it was a fun experiment, even if none of them are usable without having someone do touch-ups in Photoshop.
