I’ve been struggling lately to name some of the secondary characters who are appearing regularly in my current project. This isn’t unusual. I often take a long time to settle on a name.
While writing one scene recently, the name Dahlia popped into my head. I wouldn’t have thought a flowery name would suit that character, but from that point on I kept thinking of her as Dahlia.
I had more trouble with a male character. After a bunch of online research, I finally found a name that I’m using for now. But the name hasn’t yet become synonymous with this character in my mind, so it might change.
At least, so far, I haven’t reused names inadvertently. In earlier versions of the SSU series, I think I had something like six different Ians!
