An image of a woman and a man, both seated, facing one another as they have a discussion. Speech bubbles say Wrong Character Mentioned and Made Up Plot Point.

Vengeance Audio Discussion from Google NotebookLM

I tried out Google’s NotebookLM this week. One of the things you can do is upload material and have Google generate an audio discussion between two AI hosts. It’s a way to help people who learn best from a discussion.

Authors have been trying it out on their own books to see if it could be a marketing tool.

My thoughts:

The Positive

The conversation sounds pretty natural.

And I have to admit, overall, it was flattering to me as an author.

They brought up some points that either I've already used in my marketing, or that I could use in my marketing. So that was helpful.

The Negative

However, while the discussion began okay, the hosts soon started making points about things that either never happened in the book or happened to a different character. And the order in which they claimed events happened is also all screwed up.

Overall, I’m disappointed. This isn’t something I’m going to try with my other books. Not at this point. Maybe later, once it's evolved.

But, to be fair, Vengeance is a complicated book with multiple point-of-view characters. It’s probably not the type of material the system was trained to handle.
